Rebuild Nepal 2017

FURNITURE, STATIONERIES FOR SRI GOWLA DEVI PRIMARY SCHOOL IN KAKANI, NEPAL

KAKANI, NEPAL: On October 27, a 6-member MMICARE team arrived in Katmandu as part of their two day trip to visit and audit the organisation’s Rebuild Nepal disaster relief programme. The two year ‘’assist and empower’’ programme was in collaboration with the APUCEN.

Our ‘’assist and empower’’ programme was aimed at the Sri Gowla Dewi Primary School and surrounding communities which were severely damaged following the April 25, 2015 earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale.

The earthquake triggered an avalanche from Mount Everest. Barely two weeks later a second earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale hit Nepal. The back to back disaster left the country and people, lost and bewildered.

MMICARE went into immediate action following the second earthquake.

MMICARE’’s first phase of assistance involved mobilising dignity kits for women, diapers and milk powder for children. This was parcelled off through the Royal Malaysian Airforce (RMAF) to be distributed in Nepal.

The second phase involved the construction of temporary shelters for earthquake victims especially single mother and the aged.

This was made possible following MMICARE’s urgent request to APUCEN to assist with their Level Two community outreach programme.

With donations from APUCEN members – USM, Kyoto Universiti of Foreign Stuidies, USIM,AIMST, UPSI and KUPUSB – and its own supporters, MMICARE commissioned the construction of 30 temporary zinc shelters complete with solar lights, PU flooring and non-perishable food items for affected families in Kakani, Nepal ahead of the 2015 winter and 2016 monsoon seasons.

Two shelters were dedicated to the Sri Gowla Dewi primary school in Kakani. The shelters which were used as kindergarten classes during the day doubled as sleeping quarters for families at night

In 2016 the Rebuild Nepal project built toilets for the students, repaired the roof and repainted the school.

In early 2017 a French NGO offered to reconstruct a single severely damaged block in the school which had been barred up since the eartquake. The cost of reconstruction was simply too high for MMICARE and we had declined to involve ourselves. It was wonderful to see the new block ready and operational.

In this 2017 final lap of the Rebuild Nepal project, MMICARE was delighted to see the fully functional school. MMICARE and APUCEN donated stationeries and new furniture for the teachers room and had a small unofficial moonlight party for the children.

We were however deeply saddened to see that many families were still living in the temporary shelters we had constructed. We were given to understand that the rebuilding process in Nepal takes time.   - ENDSnepal1nepal3

Peace Road 2017

The Peace Road Charity Run Penang 2017 was held recently at the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Main Campus. The run was jointly organised by the Asia Pacific University-Community Engagement Network (APUCEN), Universal Peace Federation (UPF) and the Collegiate Association for the Research of Principles of Penang (CARP).

Over 1,000 participants came together under the spirit of peace and unity to take part in this running event, held at the USM grounds which served as the run route. Many of them had gathered at the USM Minden Field even before dawn to run in the 7-km race.

The run also served as a fund-raiser to assist charitable organisations, namely Cerebral Palsy (Spastic) Children’s Association of Penang and Ajar-ajar Malaysia (which provides free tuition for underprivileged children).

The Chief Executive Officer of APUCEN, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Aileen Tan Shau Hwai said, the Peace Charity Run was initiated 3 years ago in Korea and today the Peace Run has been carried out in more than 130 countries promoting global peace. This is the very first time it has been held in Penang and USM is honoured to host the event.

"This is a Fun Run to promote peace. Each of us believes that it is more than just a run; deep inside each of us, we believe in promoting 1Nation1Heart for Peace," she added.

Meanwhile, according to a participant, who only wanted to be known as Mr. Wong, this is an awesome running event that can satisfy both the internal desire for peace and the external need for exercise.

Said another participant, Siti Sarah, this run provided a good platform for all runners to get together and share the spirit of togetherness and also to strengthen the ties among family members and friends, by getting fit and healthy through running.

Aside from the run, a lucky draw was also held offering attractive prizes such as laptop, bicycles, rice cookers, mobile power banks, thermos, backpacks, infuser water tumblers, stainless steel food containers and 3D Trick Art Museum free entry tickets.

Among those present at the run were the representative of the Chairman of Penang Port Commission (PPC), Dato’ Philip Kang Chun Keong; Overseas Director of Universal Peace Federation (UPF) Malaysia, Yutaka Yamada; Deputy Director of Penang Youth and Sport Department, Vijayan Kumar Nambiar a/l Nadarajan Nambiar; Director of USM Sports and Recreation Centre, Muhamad Mohd Hanif; Advisor of CARP Penang & Ajar-ajar Penang, Wendy Koay; President of the Cerebral Palsy (Spastic) Children Association of Penang, Ng Fook On; and Peace Road Charity Run 2017 Main Sponsor & ODR Lubricants Business Development Director, Darren Hah.

The Asia-Pacific University-Community Engagement Network (APUCEN) President and also the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr. Asma Ismail, said this in her opening speech at the National Youth Education Seminar at Kolej Universiti Perguruan Ugama Seri Begawan (KUPU SB), with the theme ‘Visionary Youths: Catalyst for Transformation’ here recently.

“To be able to lead a nation, the future generation needs to strike a balance between knowledge and character, and this can be achieved through education.

“There should be a flexible education, where the future generation will be able to work and at the same time has access to higher education. Universities need to change to make this possible; universities need to make sure that their degree programmes offer value and flexibility in order for the students to acquire living skills and have an entrepreneurial mindset,” she said.

Asma stressed that today’s youth have to face the 21st century challenges that cannot be ignored, for example economy crisis, globalisation and fast digital pace. As such they need to be competitive in order to meet these challenges, and must be more involved in community activities and volunteerism.

“The future generation, born in the internet era, needs to know how to differentiate between what is right and what is wrong with the information overload from the internet.

“Therefore, education plays a very important role in guiding this generation to balance between knowledge and character towards forming a healthy generation and instill in them the values that build character in order for them to be able to give back to the society,” she said.
